Rome Drawing & Painting: Michelangelo Learning from the Ancients, JUNE 2014
Twelve professionals and amateurs of the classical tradition joined eight students from the BAA Class of 2014 for the ICAA’s annual weeklong journey to the Eternal City this past June. This year’s group benefitted from expert instruction from noted educators Jeffrey Blanchard and James Sondow, among others, including a very special afternoon watercolor lesson with instructor Stephen Harby. The group spent time exploring the Pantheon, Ara Pacis, Museo di Roma and Capitalini, Villa Farnesina, and even the Palazzo Farnese- to name a few well-known sites- as well as innumerable churches and monuments. Despite this, the group was not deprived a visit to the American Academy, of which the ICAA is a member organization, for an unforgettable lunch and exclusive tour of the grounds and studios. The group also found time to head to Tivoli to record the ruined grandeur of Hadrian’s Villa, and to lunch at La Sibilla, unmatched for its gastronomy and history as one of the oldest restaurants in the world (founded in 1720, host to guests from Pope Leo VII to Yoko Ono), as well as its idyllic location among the ruins of the Temple of Vesta, situated under the wisteria of the park of Villa Gregoriana. An unexpected summer rain shower and hail storm could not even deter the most intrepid members of our group from exploring the technical and artistic virtuosity of the late Renaissance masterpiece Villa d’Este.
Through the generous leadership of Mr. Kahlil Hamady and the continued fundraising efforts of his offices in Charlottesville, VA and Greenwich, CT, the Hannah McCarthy Smith Memorial Scholarship remains a vital resource for aspiring participants of the ICAA’s annual Rome Drawing and Painting tour. Since its founding, the scholarship fund has assisted eight students from across the country in discovering the culture, history, and beauty of Rome. This year’s Hannah McCarthy Smith Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ms. Kathleen Baldwin, a graduate of our 2014 Winterim program.
