ICAA Chapter News

Washington Mid Atlantic

The Washington Mid Atlantic welcomes new board member and Membership Chair, Shanda Burk, General Manager of Waterworks DC.

This past Spring the Chapter hosted a lecture and book signing with John B. Murray at the historic Capitol Hill studio of Oehem, van Sweden & Associates Landscape Architects. Another lecture and book signing was held with architect, author, painter, and educator David Mayernik, and was sponsored by Hyde Park Mouldings.

In April the Traditional Building Conference was held at the Georgetown University Conference Center. Our Chapter had a booth with ICAA Literature and was shared with the Beaux-Arts Atelier (BAA) students. The entire BAA Studio was in attendance at the conference and proudly displayed their work and answered questions regarding their work for attendees.

May was a busy month for the Chapter, beginning with a tour of Pope’s National Gallery of Art, led by Susan Wertheim, Chief Architect and Deputy Administrator for Capital Projects, National Gallery of Art. Also in May, Phillip Dodd joined us for a lecture and book signing of his latest book, The Art of Classical Details. The month drew to a close with an exclusive tour of Darryl Carter’s Embassy Row townhouse.

The summer culminated with Discover Washington’s Classical Commercial Buildings, a lunchtime walking tour led by Milton Grenfell, NCARB, CNU.

Upcoming events for the fall include:

  • Interiors of William Hodgins: Understated & Elegant, lecture and book signing by Stephen Salny on September 18
  • Clara Barton – Missing Soldiers Museum Tour on October 8 sponsored by OLBN
  • Possible tour of Baltimore on Saturday, October 18

Looking ahead, the Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter is excited to announce the inaugural John Russell Pope Awards. Under the guidance of Awards Chairman, David Hathcock, the awards ceremony is scheduled for April 17, 2015 at the Cosmos Club. More details will be announced shortly.
